A More Perfect Electronic Records Strategy:
How the New DoD 8180 can Boost your IG Program

Good records management ensures mission success because records are at the heart of accountability, institutional knowledge, and solid operational planning. Harnessing the potential of information requires investing in information governance capabilities and talent.

The US Department of Defense (DoD) Records Strategy is a plan to modernize the way this agency manages its records. This session covers useful ways to realize the vision of a Records Strategy to assess, collaborate, and implement effective electronic records management (ERM) systems with the goals of allowing you to (1) Curate, (2) Automate, and (3) Govern. You will look with glasses to see how governance, processes and roles can X-Ray your approach to ERM in a decentralized world of shared IT systems. What tactics help partner information governance with Compliance, IT, Information Security, and leadership? Mark Patrick, CIP recently rolled out DoD Manual 8180.01, a major records strategy update to the seminal DoD 5015.02-STD Electronic Records Management (ERM), a systems standard for DoD that many public and private sector IG professionals adopted as their own.

Mark Patrick, CIP, AROC, leads the US Department of Defense (DoD) Information Management Team. A retired US Navy helicopter pilot who has served in the federal civil service for over 16 years, he worked in information and records management for over 18 years
and served on the Joint Staff from 2007-2023 as the Chief of the Information Management Division prior to assuming his current role. Mark served 6 years on the board of directors of the Association for Intelligent Information Management (AIIM) during which he was the 2018 board chairman and the 2019 Immediate Past Chair. He holds an AIIM Certified Information Professional (CIP) and NARA’s Agency Records Officer Certificate (AROC) and was inducted into AIIM’s Company of Fellows in 2020.
